Twisted Roots Brewing: St. Louis, MO

There is plenty of activity in the Midtown area of St. Louis. The Cortex Innovation Community is a technology startup hub, and the redevelopment of the old Armory building will have a similar impact on employment. Saint Louis University and Washington University have campuses very near all of the developments.

Fortunately for Twisted Roots, they are right across the street from the Armory construction. They are a block from SLU, and they are situated right on Forest Park Avenue. They have a great plot of land to prepare for the exciting changes.

Owners Adam Patterson and Kris Wangelin have spent many years on the St. Louis brewing scene. They each worked at Main Street Brewing Company in Belleville, IL before coming back into Missouri to work for 4 Hands.

As for the beer, Adam describes the food and drinks as “Traditional with a twist.” For example, the reuben is a classic bar food sandwich. At Twisted Roots, visitors can buy their homemade Reuben Egg Rolls for a new take on the original. This brewery wants to be a neighborhood watering hole with good homemade food and a wide variety of beers to cater to any drinker. Some are brewed true to their style, but many others are made to be more unique after starting with the same basic malt profiles, etc. Here is the Wet Hop IPA (right), with local hops from Lewistown, IL. The Knew Wit is on the left.

This is the Twisted Burger, and like all their burgers, it is a whopping half pound. Here it is photographed with the Kingsman, a nitro extra strong bitter. In the background, the brewing space is visible through a glass wall at the edge of the dining space.

Many drinkers in this town are Anheuser-Busch loyalists, so many breweries have added beers to mimic an American lager. Adam and Kris created the Canookie to entice new craft drinkers. For both food and drinks, the menu is always changing. In the next few weeks, a brunch menu will be available on the weekends, complete with unlimited mimosas, beer, and bloodies. There will also be a beer brewed explicitly for beermosas. If you’ve never had one, it’s a beer mixed with orange juice to have with your breakfasts. It’s just as good as it sounds.Even while I was there, I saw Kris make a corned beef hash waffle dish that will (likely) be a part of the menu.

Twisted Roots is located at 3690 Forest Park Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63108. Here you will find great food and try some beers from some of St. Louis’ experienced pros. If you’re a SLU or WashU student, a Cortex employee, or a resident of nearby apartment complexes, the owners of Twisted Roots would love to meet you. Whether you’re with a group or exploring on your own, they want to welcome you to their neighborhood bar.

As Twisted Roots begins to expand its events and prepare its new menu, there are some regular events that customers will want to note:
