If you have ever visited the mid-sized port city on Lake Superior, you know that Canal Park is the tourism center of the city. Canal Park Brewing Company is located in the heart of the Park. Opened in 2012, the local owners renovated an industrial mattress spring factory on Lake Superior to open up their brewery. The building stands only 100 feet from the water by my estimation. On the inland side of the building, the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge can be seen from the parking lot.
As a brewpub in Minnesota, their distribution is limited to on-site sales. You can stop by for a meal at a table, a drink at the bar, or a growler at the front stand, but you cannot find Canal Park products in other locations. The location on the lake and the restrictions on sales make Canal Park Brewing a destination.
Besides food and drink, Canal Park boasts a nicely-sized merchandise shop near the lobby of the brewery. Stop in for clothing and other beer-related accessories to accent your stay in Duluth.
Northern Wisconsin artist and welder Matt Tetzner is behind some of the decorations on the wall. The work pictured below advertises the Northcoasters, Canal Park Brewing’s superfans. They have events and activities throughout the year to meet other Canal Park fans, from beach cleanups along the lake or paddle boarding (hopefully during the summer).
The most established drink in their year-round repertoire is their Nut Hatchet Brown Ale. In 2014, it won silver at the World Beer Cup in the English-Style Brown Ale category. Another popular year-round offering is the Stoned Surf IPA.
Extensive seating on the patio makes this a popular summer night spot, with an expansive walkway taking up more space than the parking lot.
